Baroque art used dramatic colours, contrasts between light and dark, light and shadow. Baroque artists made artworks explain stories from the bible. In this period they lowered the contrast and started using bolder colours. The Baroque artists started creating artworks in landscapes.
What was happening historically and culturally during this period?
During the 15th and 16th century, Popes and Saints of the Catholic Church appreciated the translation of the Holy Bible from Latin to English, which was accomplished by a man named Desiderius Erasmus. Jesus Christ was made to be seen as a God during this period, someone to pray to, look up to and to worship. This made Jesus in art seem even more important that ever.

In this period Jesus is being portrayed as a savior, hero, strong. This portrays Jesus as a friend, your friend who always has your back.
