The Gothic art period began during the 12th century till the 16th century. It was this particular art period where most of the greatest cathedrals were built.

Buildings that used Gothic art involved: passages and scenes from the bible, that were carved into the walls. Gothic art used dark colour, contrast in art to add a dull look to the artwork. Gothic art sometimes makes figures look weak and powerless.
What was happening historically and culturally during this period?
Apart from all the other churches and cathedrals built during the Gothic art period, there were some small churches that were built as well. Gothic art was mainly used for all the bigger churches and cathedrals.

In this period Jesus is portrayed as the savior, dull, sad, sacrifice. This is relating to when Jesus suffered carrying the cross and dying on the cross.
